Outdoor events compress weather risk into decisions that often have to be made in minutes, with thousands of people, fixed schedules, and limited shelter options in play.
At Fenway Park, I provided real-time weather guidance as an approaching thunderstorm threatened an outdoor concert. That guidance provided additional lead time to move attendees from exposed seating into protected areas before the storm arrived.
The objective: turn rapidly changing weather information into enough lead time for operators to act, protecting people while minimizing unnecessary disruption.

More than 48 hours before a scheduled outdoor event at Polar Park, operations faced a choice: wait for greater forecast certainty or act while there was still time to reschedule.
I recommended cancellation while that flexibility was still available. Rain was not certain to persist through the entire event window, but waiting for greater certainty would have reduced the available options.
The event was cancelled in advance. During the scheduled event window, widespread rain moved across Polar Park.
The value: acting before certainty arrives, while operational options are still available.

Kevin Lemanowicz is a meteorologist with 35 years of experience analyzing and communicating weather risk, including 30 years at Boston 25 News, where he served as Chief Meteorologist.
Beyond broadcasting, Kevin provided operational weather support for 13 seasons with the Boston Red Sox and five seasons with the Worcester Red Sox, working directly with decision-makers on start times, delays, field protection, lightning risk, and rapidly changing conditions.
That experience revealed a persistent gap: having a forecast and knowing what to do with it are two different things. Organizations still have to determine what changing conditions mean for their specific operation and when action is warranted.
